Apple, Pandora, Backflip sued over iPhone data privacy

Apple, Pandora, Backflip sued over iPhone data privacy

A new lawsuit has been filed against Apple and two third party app developers, Pandora Media and Paper Toss maker Backflip Studios, claiming damages for users over allegations that their unauthorized private data was used to deliver targeted ads.

The case, filed in New York on behalf of Jarret Ammer by Peter Cambs of the Parker Waichman Alonso law firm, appears to be similar to a case filed in San Jose, California, last December.

Like the previous suit, the new complaint appears to be patterned directly upon a Wall Street Journal article which highlighted mobile apps as using the same kind of anonymous user tracking "cookies" that conventional web ad networks use to improve the relevance of display ads. The difference between the two cases involving smartphone apps and traditional web cookies is that smartphones have a Unique Device ID (UDID) that advertisers can reliably associate with a given user, and which may be linked with location data collected as the user carries the device.

The suit notes that "Apple certainly understands the significance of its UDID and users' privacy, as, internally Apple claims that it treats UDID information as 'personally identifiable information' because, if combined with other information, it can be used to personally identify a user."

However, the complaint also says Apple "does not provide users any way to delete or restrict access to their devices' UDIDs," and that while the company has set up policies to prohibit and remove any apps that "collect and send device data to a third party for processing or analysis," it continues to collect data allegedly collected from users without their consent.

The suit specifically notes that two apps described by the Wall Street Journal article are collecting data but not providing any "location based services" as outlined in the terms of service distributed with iPhone and iPad devices.

"None of these Defendants adequately disclose to Plaintiff and members of the proposed Class that they are transmitting such information to third-party advertising networks," the complaint states. "Plaintiff and members of the proposed class were harmed by Defendants' actions in that their personal, private information was obtained without their knowledge or consent."

The suit adds that Apple "aided and abetted" third party software developers by giving them "substantial assistance," opening the company up to liability for other defendant's torts. It also notes that because Apple is in a joint venture with third party developers, it is "thus legally responsible for the tortuous conduct alleged."

The complaint states that by "accessing and transmitting UDID and location data on the [smartphone] computer of Plaintiff and members of the proposed class, Defendants have accessed Plaintiffs' computer … in excess of the authorization" of those users, alleging that the defendants have violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and New York Computer Crime Law.

The suit says the transmission of users' device IDs and location data "caused harm aggregating at least $5,000 in value," and seeks "recovery for this loss, as well as injunctive relief, to prevent future harm."

The suit also alleges that Apple and its developers have violated general business law related to "unconscionable and deceptive conduct" as well as "trespass to personal property" and taking property "in the form of information that is private and personal."

iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S Release Date Before Black Friday?

iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S Release Date Before Black Friday?

As days go by, the rumor-mills for the iPhone 4S nee iPhone 5 is becoming more prevalent. This time, several sources are confirming its production will start in August and its fastest launch time will arrive on September, whereas some pundits believe its release date could go as late as October or even November – before Black Friday 2011.

For those who are unaware, last week saw a revelation that the next-generation iPhone will be called as iPhone 4S, whereas the model "iPhone 5" will only be revealed next year.

iphone 4 s iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S Release Date Before Black Friday?

According to DT, due to the large production unit for the iPhone 4, increased with the revelation of its CDMA version for Verizon; it would be lucrative for Apple to adjust its release date later than June.

Question is when?

In our previous report, we revealed that if all the upgrades for the next iPhone would only be about its A5 CPU and 8MP camera, without changing its display or entire façade like the previous model, it's believable that Apple can pull it for a quick release on September; which also means the next iPod Touch model would have its launch pushed on a later month – could be before Black Friday.

Then again, there's still some morsel of doubt that iPhone 4S may have a delayed release, and can be pushed before the holiday period, if some problems for its "manufacturing process" will occur again – just like on the White iPhone 4.

But the bottom factor is, the company wouldn't miss the fat holiday this year without revealing another hardware upgrade for the iPhone. That's too big to miss even for a company like Apple.

iPhone 5 Release or iPhone 4S Release

iPhone 5 Release or iPhone 4S Release

Does the speculation over when the iPhone 5 will see the light of day ever stop? Earlier we posted an article which claims the next generation iPhone is delayed until October, and now we have a claim that according to certain analysis that the iPhone5 or iPhone 4S whichever it turns out to be will release in June/July rather than September.

According to an article over on Online Social Media, by way of iClarified, Andy Zack of Seeking Alpha claims that analysis of Apple's quarterly guidance apparently reveals, " Apple will release the next iPhone in June/July rather than in September."

Apparently during the Q2 conference call Peter Oppenheimer, Apple CFO said, "We expect OpEx [operating expenses] to be about $2.5 billion, including about $255 million related to stock-based compensation expense."

However according to Zack "Oppenheimer might as well have said, "Despite what you might hear on Wall Street, we expect the iPhone 5 4G to be released in late June or early July as planned."

Why Oppenheimer's statement translates into a "late June or early July" release for the iPhone 5g escapes me, but one thing is for sure, the iPhone 5 apple/4S will release only when Apple confirms it will release, and all else is simply speculation, but it does get somewhat confusing at times don't you agree?

iPhone, iOS 5 in sync as release date delay buys Apple time to realign

iPhone, iOS 5 in sync as release date delay buys Apple time to realign

Fear not, those averse to symmetry: fears that the iPhone 5 might ship without iOS 5 appear to have gone by the wayside now that the white iPhone 4 has signaled a later iPhone 5 release date than originally expected. The way in which Apple teased its WWDC conference made it clear that the company's fifth generation touchscreen operating system would be previewed in broad strokes for developer purposes, rather than released to consumers, at the June 2011 event. That led to the question as to whether Apple would dare to initially push the iPhone 5 to market with an interstitial iOS release such as iOS 4.5 instead of the next generation software. And that in turn would have led to the question of just what the iPhone 5 had to offer. When the iPhone 4 shipped last year, Apple made clear that the then-new iOS 4 was an integral part of the new phone, as much a tentpole feature as any iPhone 4 hardware attributes. The notion that the iPhone5 would arrive in June without iOS 5 in tow would have made for an out of sync release, with iOS 5 showing in who knows what timeframe. Perhaps in September, along with the iPod touch 5, which also runs iOS. Perhaps in March of 2012 with the iPad 3. But none of that really made sense, as even though iOS is a tri-device operating system, it's always seen a new generation along with the iPhone. And because both the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 have been pushed back to later release than had been expected for either, that synchronicity streak will apparently remain intact for another generation – you'll just have to wait a little longer for it than usual. Here's more on the iPhone 5.

IPhone 5 rumours

IPhone 5 rumours

In recent times, there have been a lot of iPhone 5 rumors as everyone is speculating about the upgrades to expect with this new device. Perhaps the biggest rumor to date would be about the release date. Some of the timelines in the reports are for somewhere between June to October, according to production time and the availability of several parts.

Here are some of the most likely features of iPhone 5:

The popular white models are anticipated to be available with this new device. Similar to the instantaneous availability of the iPad 2 Review, this new device should have the white models ready from the first day.

Users can also expect to have even more internal memory storage, which includes the likelihood of a model with 64 GB.

It is believed that Verizon users will get this new device simultaneously with AT&T users. One cannot really think of a good reason why this would not be the case.

The general opinion of the techies is that iPhone5 is going to have a similar design like the iPhone 4 model. It might be a bit slimmer with a greater screen, but the general form will stay the same.

There are also rumors about improved recording for camera and video, plus a much faster processor. The HDMI Output is expected to much better. Besides that, an integrated NFC technology could deliver mobile payments straight to the iPhone 5. Note that this can be a dangerous thing for shoppers!

The following are some of the maybes:

All the internal memory storage will be in a virtual iTunes cloud, obtainable by a 3G/4G or wireless network, which could be a cool concept. There is still an ongoing debate about whether or not iPhone 5g is going to work on 4G /LTE network. This would mean much faster connectivity and internet speeds.

If the rumors are true, users can forget about the home button as it would be substituted for a sensitive touch area. Most users are anticipating that the new design is what they have been looking forward to, such as one that is similar to iPad 2 with the same appearance and feel.

Avid users of iPhone normally drain the battery life much faster. As a result, most users are looking forward to a battery life that can last for much longer.

Finally, with all the IPhone 5 rumors around one can only dream of getting all the improved features and functions that they desire. It is said that Apple has recently obtained a patent for the 3-D screen technology, which means that the 3-D effect will be available on screen.

iPhone 5 Arriving Several Months Later Than Usual

iPhone 5 Arriving Several Months Later Than Usual

Reports are surfacing from one of Apple's suppliers of iPhone manufacturing equipment that expected orders are "several months later than usual" – which could be pointing to a September launch for the new iPhone handset.

Analysts have been predicting for months that Apple's fifth-generation iPhone handset would be set to launch in September, as opposed to the usual June-July timeframe. On Friday, Apple analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray became the latest to offer this prediction and updated his financial forecasts for Apple's stock, traded as AAPL.

Munster reported that previously, there had been an average of 99 days between an Apple iOS announcement and the ship date of the newest iPhone. This compares to an average of 79 days between the iOS announcement and the previewing of the new iPhone handset and all of its features.

Operating under this assumption, if Apple does the expected and previews the new iOS software at its annual WorldWide Developers Conference (WWDC) which begins on June 6, the trend would point to an iPhone 5 preview date of August 24 and a ship date of September 13. This is, of course, if the relatively-unpredictable Apple sticks to the way it has done things previously.

Munster also sees a September launch as "normal" for new iPhone hardware, as sales of the iPhone do not generally have a serious impact until the September quarter anyway. Apple's iPhone 5G was released in July, placing it in the September quarter, and the 3GS and iPhone 4 were released at the end of June, with very relatively few sales occurring before the start of the September quarter – beginning July 1.

Many analysts, including Munster, are anticipating the launch to focus around minor hardware upgrades and major software improvements. iOS 5 is expected to lead the improvements for the iPhone5, with the hardware potentially receiving a slightly larger display that serves as a "window into the software," according to Munster, among other small changes.

Rumors have been circulating about a larger, 4-inch display coming in the next iPhone for months. Munster believes that the larger screen is "more likely a 2011 feature" than one that would appear in 2012. However, Munster sees support for newer "4G" network technology – such as LTE – won't arrive until the sixth-generation iPhone or beyond.

Piper Jaffray has targeted Apple to sell 16 million iPhone handsets in the quarter ending June 30 and 21 million in the quarter ending September 30. Munster confirmed that a later-than-June launch for the fifth-generation iPhone wouldn't place their sales predictions "at risk".

Finally, Munster offered that many different issues could have delayed the new iPhone, including supply issues caused by the Japan earthquake, the decision of whether or not to support LTE technology, and delays in fully completing software- driven innovations that Apple wants to include with the handset's launch.

Apple Likely to Integrate iCloud for the iPhone 5

Apple Likely to Integrate iCloud for the iPhone 5

Apple has been rumored to move from its current online file storage provider, MobileMe, to iCloud, which has recently been renamed to CloudMe. The overhauling of this internet service that started as iTools and renamed in 2008 together with the release of the then- launched iPhone 3G is said to unfold together with the release of the rumored next generation of iPhone, the Apple iPhone5. The iPhone 5 will be released with the much talked about operating system, the iOS 5. The beta version of the iCloud service is also said to be prepped up for the operating system for the Apple Macbooks, the Mac OS X Lion.

Sources say that Apple has purchased the domain name iCloud.com for $4.5 million from the Sweddish company, Xcerion who is responsible for creating iCloud. iCloud, on the other hand, was just rebranded as CloudMe with the company purchasing the domain name CloudMe.com.

News and rumors has it that Apple's rumored iCloud service is focused on music streaming and downloads with Apple recently closing a deal with at least two major record labels to allow the company to stream and distribute copyrighted materials to users and subscribers.

Apple's current MobileMe service which costs $99 annually offers users with 20 GB of virtual file storage memory for music which you can access from anywhere in the world using different devices, such as iPad, desktop or laptop computers and smart phones. But reporters and Apple close- watchers suggest that there are strong evidences pointing to the company's efforts to broaden the scope of their storage, with hopes that the service will become an online diary and locker where users can store their precious moments such as videos, pictures and music files.

Apple is also said to be overheard stating that they might make the MobileMe service- which will eventually be known as iCloud- free for its users. This strategy would lead to sky- rocket sales and convince more consumers to take a hold of their hardware devices. This plan would lead to more intrigues and speculations about Apple's need to upgrade the amount of memory storage that they have on their iPhones and other devices.

By fall of this year, we'll get to see the revamped and renamed internet cloud service from Apple- that, if rumors about the September release of the iPhone 5 are true.

Two Versions of the iPhone 5 to be Released

Two Versions of the iPhone 5 to be Released

The latest information we have been hearing about the iPhone 5 is that it will have 2 different versions released. An Apple parts supplier has stated that Apple has been ordering two sets of every component in varying quality. This leads us to believe their will be a Standard version of the iPhone 5, as well as a Pro version with a higher quality design as well as a higher price tag. We won't know exactly what Apple is doing until we are a bit closer to the release date. We are still expecting a September release in the United States. We expect a slightly delayed release for Canada, which will likely see the iPhone 5 in October or November.

iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner and Smaller Says Orange CEO

Ah the continuing speculation over what the next generation iPhone will look like carries on today, this time in regards to the earlier rumour of Apple working on a smaller SIM card for their Apple gear and apparently whilst chatting in an interview the CEO of France Telecom/Orange made mention of the iPhone 5 being smaller and thinner.

According to an article over on 9to5 Mac, Stephane Richard, CEO of Orange in an interview with AllthingsD, apparently stated that the next generation iPhone would be smaller and thinner, although the CEO didn't say the iPhone5, he actually referred to the device as the next iPhone.

But as the "next iPhone" is presumed to be the iPhone 5g or iPhone 4S that's being bandied about one can assume he was referring to the iPhone 5 apple, but he didn't say how much smaller and thinner the iOS smartphone would be.

Although this latest rumour does give credence to the possibility of a smaller SIM card, a rumour that came about because Apple wants to make future iPhones thinner and needs the space. Having said that, the only people who really know what Apple is up to is Apple so as usual this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

So what do our readers think, would you like the iPhone 5 to be smaller and thinner, or do you feel Apple shouldn't make the iPhone smaller when others are making their handsets larger?

Separated iPhone 5 LED Flash Rumor Makes Little Sense

Separated iPhone 5 LED Flash Rumor Makes Little Sense

Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 is due to get an upgrade on its rear-facing camera, bumping up to an 8-megapixel design. But new purported, leaked photos of iPhone 5 parts and cases show what looks like a LED flash on the other side of the device. Where's the logic in this new design?

The tech media is currently abuzz with newly-surfaced photos of cases and backplates that seem to show an LED flash that is positioned on the other side of the supposedly new iPhone 5 design. There is a great deal of excitement and anticipation surrounding this new development, with iPhone enthusiasts anticipating a dramatic shift in the iPhone 5′s rear-facing camera array, which is already purported to be getting an 8-megapixel upgrade.

While few are questioning the voracity and reliability of the photos and sources, even fewer are scrutinizing the logic of a separated LED camera flash, and what the basis would be for Apple to shift the iPhone's camera flash so dramatically far away from the sensor itself.

The few theories on why the iPhone5 could feature a separated LED flash are seemingly logical at first glance: we all know that there were light issues with the camera sensor on the white iPhone 4, and even flash and camera issues with lighting on the original iPhone 4 back in the Summer of 2010. It would be easy enough to assume that moving the LED flash to the other side of the iPhone 5 would somehow solve the problem.

But given the lights limitations of LED flashes, this seems doubtful at best.

While LED flashes have become increasingly popular on smartphones, the light that they emit is still not as bright as other flash forms, such as a Xenon flash. As a result, the camera flash from a LED is sometimes not bright enough to fill the photo with ample light in low-lit conditions. This is why devices like the iPhone (and all other smartphones with rear-facing cameras) have positioned the LED flash in close proximity to the sensor; it's a way of maximizing the amount of light that ultimately enters the camera, as reflected off of the subject.

By definition, moving the camera flash away from the sensor on the iPhone 5 would put an already lesser-lit flash at a farther distance from the sensor — and at a greater angle to the subject being photographed. It's hard to believe that moving the LED flash could ultimately help in this regard — unless the new flash turned out to be something of the Xenon type.

Shifted LED Flash on the iPhone 5 To Eliminate Red Eye?

Another theory suggests that the moved LED flash on the iPhone 5 could be to counteract red eye. But this new design seems dubious as well.

the Nokia Astound's 8-megapixel camera sensor array with dual LED flashes.

It is true that red eye is caused by red light being bounced back off of the irises of people into the camera, which is often caused by on-camera flashes that are in close proximity to the sensor or shutter. But in order to truly eliminate red eye, the flash source would need to be sufficiently far from the optical axis of the camera, and it is doubtful that moving it a couple of inches to the right would do the trick. In order to reduce red eye, it would make more sense for Apple to further refine the use of a pre flash on the iPhone 5g, a technique that causes a person's irises to contract, thus minimizing the bounce-back of red light.

HTC Evo 4G versus iPhone 5HTC's Evo 4G also has two LEDs in close proximity to the sensor.

Does An 8-Megapixel Camera Require That the LED Flash Be Farther Away?

Finally, perhaps the moved flash on the iPhone 5 has something to do with the addition of a 8-megapixel camera? That could be the case, however, to date, no other 8-megapixel smartphone sports a separated LED flash like the one that is purported in the photo. The Nokia Astound features not one, but two LED flashes right next to the sensor. The same goes for Nokia's N86.

But it isn't just Nokia that is using this camera and LED flash set-up. HTC is doing the same thing with their Evo iphone 5 4G. Like the Nokias, it features two LED flashes in close proximity to the camera sensor.

What is apparent from these other smartphones with 8-megapixel cameras is that the 8mp sensors need more light, and they need that light relatively close to the sensor in order to avoid grainy photos. If this is the case, then why would Apple continue to use just one LED flash for an 8-megapixel camera, and put it on the other end of the rear plate?

iphone 4 case from unieaNewer iPhone 4 case designs account for the LED flash so as not to interfere with it . . .

Separated LED Flash Could Lead To a New Photo Discoloration Problem on the iPhone 5

As we have reported in another article, photo discoloration was an early problem on the iPhone 4, and more than a few theories abounded as to why this was the case. While some suggested that it was the result of a software issue in how the iPhone 4 processed yellow light, others postulated that many photo discoloration problems were caused by iPhone 4 case designs, which were too hastily retro-engineered from iPhone 3Gs designs and did not account for the LED flash. As a result, some of the cases came too close in contact with the LED flash and resulted in partially concealing the flash strobe.

Anyone who has ever accidentally had a part of their finger over the flash of a camera knows how it can discolor a photo.

iphone 5 caseThis purported iPhone 5 case — and separated LED flash — might discolor photos.

Newer iPhone 4 cases have re-designed the camera lens cutouts around the iPhone 4′s sensor and flash so as not to conceal it. However, in the recent purported photo of the iPhone 5 case, the cutout for the LED flash would be closely cropped to the flash itself, lending to the theory that photos could easily become discolored. Another unknown is what the effect of having such a expanse of colored case between the sensor and flash would cause — could it lead to further discoloration?

It is possible that Apple has a new patent for an LED camera flash that will be bright enough to be positioned on the other side of the iPhone 5. But I have combed all of the Apple patents, and I can find nothing to suggest this. I remain skeptical of all purported "leaked" photos of the iPhone 5 — and these recent ones are no exception.

Photo enthusiasts: what do you think? Can you find any evidence out there to suggest how this new camera array would make any sense for the iPhone 5 apple? We'd love to hear from you, and start a discussion on whether or not these new photos make any real sense.

iPhone 5 synchronized release to erase white iPhone 4 thickness debate

iPhone 5 synchronized release to erase white iPhone 4 thickness debate

The iPhone 5, whatever it ends up looking like, will debut in synchronized fashion across its various carriers and in available color choices, putting to bed the disjointed iPhone 4 era in which the original arrived in the summer, the Verizon iPhone 4 variant in the winter, and the white iPhone 4 option in the spring. These moves were made out of necessity, as the Verizon wasn't contractually do-able any sooner, and the white model had been delayed due to production issues. One way or the other, we'll see all the iPhone 5 has to offer one day one unless something unexpected goes wrong. And that's good news, because the staggered iPhone 4 rollout has led to not only a disjointed iPhone lineup, but a disjointed perception of the lineup as well. In fact one need look no further than the debate, still unsettled, as to whether the white iPhone 4 really is thicker than the black model.

Apple, unofficially at least, claims they're the exact same thickness – but that's based on a private Twitter message attributed to Apple's Phil Schiller, far from something that can be considered an official company statement. Consumer Reports has claimed that they're the same thickness, but these are the same dumbasses who helped perpetrate the phony iPhone 4 antenna controversy, meaning that not only can they not be taken seriously with regards to anything they say about the iPhone, it's the to the point that the opposite is almost instinctively assumable. Meanwhile, all across the internet users have posted side by side photos which prove that the white and black iPhone 4 models are in fact of different thicknesses. And in our own in-house experience here, it's clear that the new white one is thicker than the old black one, based both on a side by side visual comparison and based on the ease with which eats fits into tight-fitting iPhone 4 cases left over from the black iPhone 4 era. The funny part is, though, that after a few days of usage, the difference in thickness appears to be shrinking between the two, which leaves us questioning our original diagnosis: after all, our tests were between a brand new white iPhone 4 and an older, used black iPhone 4. It's not the overall product which is thicker, but instead simply the ridge around the edges of the front and rear surface which make it thicker. And after a few days of use, those ridges have apparently worn down just a tiny bit – which would explain why the white model initially appeared to be obviously thicker than the black one but now not so much. Case solved? We're still looking into it.

But the bottom line is that Apple opened itself up to these kinds of situations, whether it be the white iPhone 4 thickness debate or the fact that manufacturers have had to release separate versions of many of their iPhone 4 accessories to accommodate the Verizon iPhone 4 model, by staggering the iPhone 4 lineup with a disjointed collection of hardware models. Even the slight differences have been enough to upset Apple's typically tightly cohesive ecosystem within each generation. And with the iPhone 5 later this year, Apple gets to hit the reset button and not only make all the iPhone 4 disjointedness go away, but also to put all of its iPhone 5 cards on the table up front so there's no mistaking what users are getting. Here's more on the white iPhone 4 and iPhone5.

Planny iPhone App Review – No Frills Planning

Planny iPhone App Review – No Frills Planning

For me to use a to-do list on a regular basis it has to be easily accessible, simple to use and very reliable.  My life is not so complex that I need anything hugely complicated, and my job requires the same thing each day, so I rarely need to plan much in advance.  To this end, the standard Calendar app on my iPhone is ideal as not only is it simple and easy to use, but it syncs with my Mac too.

If I were to swap over to a new planner, the app would have to be something very special indeed.  Will Planny be that app?  Let's find out.

Released at the beginning of April, Planny promises to be a streamlined organizer that makes the most of the touchscreen interface.  As with most organizers, when you start the app you're presented with a daily view split into hours, with the option of viewing your calendar by month too.  Handily you can set the hours displayed on a single page to those of your work, so there's no unnecessary swiping.

Events appear inside circles  – although can be altered to a square, heart or hexagon – and a double tap shows all the relevant information.  Each appointment can be assigned a start time and a title, plus there is the option to add notes, set an alert or schedule a repeat.

With your appointment saved, you can assign a priority level.  This is then visually indicated on the daily view by both color – green for low importance, blue for medium and red for high priority – and by how high up the screen the appointment is.  This makes spotting the most important things in your day very easy, and is the best thing about Planny.  Switching to calendar view adds a small number alert on any days with appointments added.

If you need to move an appointment to a later time, you can tap and drag it across the screen to a new time, another excellent time saver.  At this point, Planny was proving useful, however, things stared to take a turn for the negative when I delved a little deeper.  That appointment I'd just dragged to a new time?  Fine if it's on the same day, but if the appointment has moved to the next day, you have to fiddle about in the menu system.  I would have much preferred the ability to drag it over to the next calendar page manually.

Then there is the adding of a new appointment.  When you've been through everything and clicked 'save' – which happens far too often – you're returned to the current day planner; so if you want to check the appointment has been saved you have to either swipe through or visit the calendar overview.  Seeing as there is a Now button to return the view to the present day, I would have preferred to see what I'd just added and compare it with other events of that day.

But the biggest problem for Planny is the way it handles more than one appointment at the same time on the same day.  Instead of clearly overlapping them, it piles them up with very little indication there's more than one appointment for that time, especially if they're all the same level of priority.  This could lead to overbooking and missed appointments – defeating the point of an organizer!

These may seem like little niggles, but as I mentioned from the start, I need the least annoying system possible if I'm to use a planner – and although Planny started out well, I soon returned to the standard Calendar.  However, Planny gains a point for being a free app, and provided your schedule isn't very busy or that likely to alter much, it's a perfectly serviceable organizer.

Positives:

  • Fast recognition of important tasks.
  • Easy to drag appointments to new times on the same day.
  • No setup, minimal menus.

Negatives:

  • Difficult to spot multiple appointments for the same time with the same priority.
  • Appointments can't be dragged to another day.
  • Not very visually impressive.

Overall: 3/5

Apple and Verizon to deliver over-the-air iOS updates to Verizon iPhone

Apple and Verizon to deliver over-the-air iOS updates to Verizon iPhone

Apple has long used the proxy of iTunes to push updates to its iOS devices: when a new software update is available, users need to plug their device in via USB, click update, and the new software version is downloaded and installed.

Smartphone competitors have long offered a different, more direct method for software updates that happens over-the-air. Specifically, when an update to Google's Android operating system or HP/Palm's webOS is released, users are provided an update notification and can update the software right on their phone. No computer required.

Now, Apple wants to provide the same convenience to their iPhone users and is preparing to provide over-the-air iOS updates, starting this fall.

Multiple sources (one as far back as March) say the new feature will debut in iOS 5, meaning iOS 5 will not come over-the-air but following point updates to it will. Just like tethering in iOS 3, Apple has the technology but cannot just unleash it everywhere. Apple and Verizon Wireless are said to have been in talks over these wireless software updates since early this year. Sources could not comment on whether or not Apple is negotiating similar deals with AT&T or international iPhone carriers.

The iOS-based AppleTV has been able to update itself without iTunes intervention so the hooks are obviously in iOS.  Two things to note:

  1. Updates are now over 600MB.  Apple would have to make these smaller to get the carriers to agree to push these things as they are.  We believe that Apple will make the updates much smaller by using incremental patches rather than full OS downloads
  2. iTunes provides the backup to the iOS device so a failed update would need some sort of backup.  We think there will be a Cloud-based backup system.

Obviously, if this is a feature in iOS 5, it should conceivably make its way to iPad and iPod touches as well.  That means  iTunes may no longer be a needed conduit for updating iOS devices in the future.  It would also mean that the iPad could finally be a stand alone device.

Jailbreak iPhone 5

Jailbreak iPhone 5

If you have just purchased an iPhone 5 one of the first things that you need to look for is an iPhone 5 jailbreak.  Most people know or have heard of the word jailbreak but many don't realize the benefits.

With an iPhone 5 jailbreak you gain more control over you iPhone.  You will have the ability to use non Apple approved apps which means you don't have to rely on the iTunes store anymore.  With an iPhone 5 jailbreak you will have Cydia installed on your iPhone and this is the best of the best when it comes to non Apple approved apps.  In fact, some of the best iPhone 5 apps are to be found here because developers are tired of Apple's strict controls and they aren't bothering trying to get their apps approved.

Why to Jailbreak iPhone 5

Another big advantage of the iPhone 5 jailbreak is the ability to turn your iPhone into a Wi-Fi spot.  You can also use your iPhone as a modem, customize the background, download and upload videos to YouTube and much more.  There really are a lot of benefits when it comes to jailbreaking the iPhone 5.

When you use an iPhone 5 jailbreak you need to be aware that this is not an unlock and all you will be doing is opening up your iPhone to allow you to install non Apple approved apps and you will also have access to all the internals of the operating system.  Basically, you have full access to all the iPhone 5 can do.

An iPhone 5 unlock is different to the jailbreak. When you unlock your iPhone you unlock it from the carrier that it is tied to.  This means that you can use any SIM card you choose.  When you unlock you will be able to use your iPhone 5 in any country in the world and the biggest advantage of this is that you get to avoid roaming charges.  All in all, the iPhone 5 unlock is a great way to save money and get cheap calls on your iPhone.

The iPhone 5 jailbreak is something that every owner will want to do because it will give them access to so much more.  They will have the ability to use the iPhone 5 to its full potential and have access to all the features that comes with it.  Apple doesn't even tell you about all the amazing things that you can do if you have full access to the iPhone 5.  There are loads of hidden features that only an iPhone 5 jailbreak will give you access to.

If you own or are considering purchasing an iPhone5 then a jailbreak and unlock solution is something that you will also want to look into.
